How were Paul & the team able to make such an impact on the communities they vsited- to the degree that they had a reputation of causing trouble? Paul tells us in 1Thes 2:2 that "with God's help we dared to preach His gospel in spite of opposition. " If our efforts to reach the communities around us are to succeed we need to recognise our need of God's help, we need a holy boldness and we need to keep sharing the Gospel.

1. It gives evidence of the security of our salvation by demonstrating the perfection of Christ and therefore His suitability as our sacrificial substitute and source of imputed righteousness. 2. It shows us the ability of Christ to be the source of our victory in the everyday battle with temptation. 3. It provides the pattern by which we can resist temptation. We will defeat temptation as we follow Christ's pattern. As He gained victory through the word - the sword of the Spirit, so shall we.

Why was Jesus baptised? Why did He undergo a baptism of repentance when He had no sin to repent of? He was baptised as our representative. He was baptised to demonstrate His commitment to being our substitute, to taking upon Himself our sins and taking our punishment. Furthermore, He was baptised to "fulfill all righteousness". Again He wasn't baptised to earn a righteousness for Himself, but rather to meet the demands of the law so that we could receive a perfect righteousness from Him through faith and so be justified before God. The effectiveness of this work is displayed in the pleasure the Father shows in His Son - a pleasure which He has in us as we put our trust in Him.

We see God at work in salvation. We see Him drawing Lydia to Himself by showing her she was made for more than this world. She was made to be a worshipper - to worship Him. She was made to know Him, to be in relationship with Him. As a consequence she was willing to listen to Paul's message and as she listened, God opened her heart to believe. Her response of faith was accompanied by the visible responses of baptism and service.

Jesus has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. But there is a danger that we can drift away from Jesus. We drift by making assumptions that He is with us and by not checking that we havent gone off without Him. We drift when He is not our No1 priority. We need to ensure that we keep close to Jesus because without Him we cant do anything. We need to keep close through prayer, meditation on His word, through waiting and looking for Him to lead us. If we do move away we need to repent, to return to Him, knowing that when we do- there He is waiting for us & loving us just the same.

It mattered to Paul. It mattered so much that it affected his relationships; it made him face the giants of pain and discomfort; it made him willing to open to criticism; it made him "go" with the gospel in a purposeful and thought out way and it kept him dependent upon the Holy Spirit.

1. When our differences arise from a challenge to the truth of who Jesus is & what has done for us; that we are saved through faith alone, then we have to make a stand. 2. We decide what is right and what is wrong by looking to God's word. 3. Where our differences arise from 2ndry matters we should bend towards what is helpful to our brothers out of love & in the pusuit of unity.
